What is SEO, and why do I need it?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and it helps your website rank higher in the search results of Google and the other search engines.
As you can see in the screenshot below, good SEO can help you dominate the search results, which will bring more traffic to your website.
How is SEO done?
**NERD ALERT – This might be really boring, so you can just skip over it if you aren’t interested in the technical stuff.**
Google has a very complicated algorithm that determines how websites rank, but for our purposes, we can simplify it down to 2 things: relevance and authority.
Relevance is determined mostly by keywords, which are just words and phrases that are important on your site. In the screenshot above, “fitness boot camp” is the important keyword phrase.
Someone searches for “fitness boot camp” in Google, and Google looks for sites that have that phrase prominently in the page name, title, headlines, body text, inbound links, meta tags, and so on.
At Launch Button, we do keyword research to find the most relevant search terms that your potential customers are using, then place them in the most important places on your site for SEO. But what we do on your site is only half the battle…
Authority is determined by how many high quality sites link to your site. Google wants to find the best result for you, so they rank sites with lots of good links higher. You can get links through online business listings, asking business associates and customers to link to you, social media, article submission, and more.
The most important part to getting links is having something interesting to link to.
Links are sort of like votes in a web democracy. If a site has a lot of votes, it gets a more prestigious position in the search results. (It is more complicated than that of course, but you get the idea.)
Important note: SEO takes a long time to have an effect, from a few months to a year. Unfortunately, the search engines are in control, so the work we do gets noticed on their time, which is usually pretty slow.
